The Enemy

Hey, I totally agree that some people are evil and need to be destroyed. However, these are only the very few top-leadership types. The rest, the grunts, they're all normal, good people like you or me. The people at the bottom are motivated by what they see and what affects them. Unfortunately, those at the top have lied to them, motivating them to kill the enemy, even though "The Enemy" is really just like them (except for the fringe tiny-% at the top).

So the common people do horrible things to the other side's civilians, and then the leaders say, "See! Look at what they've done to us! This is just what we were telling you! Now go kill The Enemy (because they're evil!)!"

We did something to tick them off. They retaliated. We killed thousands of their civilians, thus proving to them that we're evil. Do you think that ANYONE doubts the fringe-radicals who have been saying this all along? They're wrong; we're good. We're wrong; the average ground-level grunt is just confused and afraid and defending himself.

Now tell me: In the above situation, which side is us and which side is them?
That's the nature of war. Now can we please cut it out?

Hmmm, personally I've always been skeptical of the whole good/evil distinction, considering so much of what happens today isn't black and white, it isn't just one side against another, it's all crazy blurred shades of grey. So I wonder how good we all really are, compared with your average grunt? Probably we are the same on many levels, but I'm not sure that 'good' is the word I'd use.
