There's a joke in here somewhere...

Today, India is majority Hindu. Hindus believe in reincarnation. But hundreds of years ago, India was majority Buddhist. Buddhists also belive in reincarnation, unless you successfully get enlightenment and escape the cycle. This means that most of the population of India must be Hindus who think they're reincarnations of people who were Buddhists seeking enlightment. But they clearly are alive and therefore did not get enlightenment, and are now a different religion.

How's that work? What do they think of their mistaken past lives? "Yeah, I don't know what I/he was thinking."?
